I needed a coffee table for my apartment. I realized that I could apply for a grant from my college to pay for materials, so long as I learned something new. I picked welding, and what followed was quite an adventure. The final design has hollow, welded sheet metal legs and a large walnut slab for the top. I also got to mess around quite a bit with the water jet.
